Dear M,
Here is a link to "The Warning," the documentary I mentioned about federal official Brooksley Born who tried to sound the alarm over the pending financial crisis that triggered The Great Recession. http://www.pbs.org/video/1302794657/
If you have not seen "Inside Job" -- winner of the Best Documentary Oscar for 2010 -- I encourage you to check it out. https://vimeo.com/27292661
And here is an informative two-part interview with Michael Lewis, author of "The Big Short."
"60 Minutes" interview with Michael Lewis
Part I:
“The leaders of Wall Street completely lost any sense of responsibility to the society.”
Interview with the author of "The Big Short"
Part 2
“The leaders of Wall Street completely lost any sense of responsibility to the society.”
Interview with Michael Lewis, author of "The Big Short"
Although "Inside Job" is an excellent documentary, the fast pace of Frontline's "Inside The Meltdown" rivals it for "best roller-coaster" analysis of the rapid-fire run-up to the near-total collapse of the national (and global) economic system in 2007-2008. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/meltdown/view/
I recommend you watch Inside The Meltdown first.
The Warning, important as it is, may be the least interesting of the "probes" cited above.
Pax,
Alan
PS We have a problem Houston! Normal people -- because they are normal people -- cannot bring themselves to believe that so many abnormal people "run the show." My core take-away from "The Great Recession" is that Wall Street's "Big Boys (and Girls)" are always on the lookout for how they can 1.) pump up, 2.) run down and 3.) always profit from "both ends" of the next boom-bust cycle. Because many "movers-and-shakers" are unconscionable psychopaths (or psychopathic "derivatives") they make ungodly profits "on the upside," then make ungodly profits "on the downside," all the while obscuring their everyday malfeasance behind smokescreens that normal people welcome because they cannot bring themselves to believe that The Economic System is operated and manipulated by scum buckets.

PPS The following TED Talk about massive profits that can now be certainly reaped by speed-of-light trading --- and "Rigged Wall Street's" review of "Flash Boys" by "Big Short" author Michael Lewis --- are eye-popping.
