Alan: America's "Thing Orientation" is excerpted from King's 1967 speech, "Beyond Vietnam." If, as some believe, King's killing was a conspiracy, it is plausible, if not likely,  that Martin's fresh view of America's essential perdition and consequent need for spiritual transformation (as revealed by the Vietnam War) was "the straw that broke the camel's back."
