Compendium Of Best Pax Posts On "Too Pure Principles" And The Collapse Of Conservatism
Jon Stewart joked on Wednesday night that 16 years of hate-watching Fox News had aged him dramatically, making him look much older than his 52 years. But he’s still got his fastball when Fox says something to raise his ire. In their most recent dust-up, some of Fox’s news personalties dismissed his contributions to the public discourse during his tenure with The Daily Show and accused him of “dishonest editing” having “no foothold in the facts.”
Flabbergasted to a near-Lindsey Graham fit of the vapors, Stewart immediately challenged Fox News to a test of truthfulness, and got the ball rolling with a six-second vine of 50 Fox errors or distortions. “They judge solely on the level of conservative content—ineverything,” Stewart went on to say. “It’s their only litmus test. Even stupid shit”—like the Oscars.
Several Fox clips propagated the idea that American Sniper, the most popular Oscar-nominated movie, was deliberately snubbed by Hollywood because of its perceived conservative slant and the political leanings of director Clint Eastwood.
“Clint Eastwood’s been a conservative icon for years,” Stewart responded. “Oscar’s already awarded him with Best Director and Best Picture during that time. The left-wing loons in Hollywood made the f–king movie in the first place and nominated it for Best Picture! Fine, Hollywood didn’t give Best Picture to American Sniper, so it must hate America. No—they didn’t even give Best Picture to the best picture. Oh, so good. Boyhood is so good.”
Stewart ripped Fox again and again and charged that their primary obedience was to a political point of view rather than the truth. “Let’s stop pretending that these concessions to the right will at any point sate the beast,” he said, before cutting to a clip of Sarah Palin criticizing the Pope. “Their chronically angry war for ideological purity, where every aspect of life becomes a two-dimensional battle for America’s soul—it ages you. Even watching it is killing me,” he concluded, pointing to an image of his younger self and joking that it was of him at the beginning of the night’s show.
