Jefferson Knew His Countrymen Had Injured Native Americans Until No Love Was Left

"The Expedition you are appointed to command is to be directed against the hostile tribes of the Six Nations of Indians, with their associates and adherents. The immediate objects are the total destruction and devastation of their settlements, and the capture of as many prisoners of every age and sex as possible. It will be essential to ruin their crops now in the ground and prevent their planting more."
George Washington's Orders To General John Sullivan, May 31, 1779

"The two principles on which our conduct towards the Indians should be founded, are justice & fear. After the injuries we have done them, they cannot love us . . . ." Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Hawkins, August 13, 1786

Reflection On Columbus: Happy To Be An American. Pissed At The Process

To whom does this land belong?

And why are the owners fleeing white people with drawn guns?

To this day, we tend to assume that Native Americans were savages, only interested in "scalping" white people.

I am quite convinced American natives were considerably more welcoming than Europeans would have been had land-hungry invaders from parts unknown shown up on Normandy's coast with vastly superior weapons.
