Immigration Will Be The Wedge That Splits Republicans

Alan: Republicans are already terrified that President Obama will use executive power to enact immigration reform.

44 can't lose.

By proclaiming wise reforms, Republicans will be unable to seek subsequent legislative repeal without permanent alienation of latino voters.

Having taken the initiative, Obama will go down in history as a statesman courageous enough to do "what was necessary" and "what the American people wanted done."

Furthermore, he will undertake needed (but blocked) reform in the teeth of mean-spirited opposition from a small-minded, self-terrorized, xenophobic party.

Here's the kicker.

In 2015, when the next Congress debates immigration reform, Obama will already be seen as the leader of that process so that whatever else is legislated will redound to 44's advantage while right-wing naysayers get creamed in The Court of Public Opinion.

Or, if the next Congress refuses to legislate meaningfull immigration reform -- still paralyzed by Republican insistence on an impermeable border  -- the outcome for American conservatives (i.e., angry white guys) will be even worse.

Immigration will be the wedge that splits Republicans. Divisions within the party are a major weakness that Obama can exploit while fixing a broken a system. Bloomberg.
