Bill Cosby: Hero To White Supremacists

Yes.

Truth has meaning and merit apart from the the moral failings of the person who proclaims it.

On the surface, there is little to criticize in Bill Cosby's captious sermon (posted below).

However, in addition to text, there is also context. And any text without a context is a pretext.

Ironically, strict adherence to the fragmented "truth" embedded in de-contextualized text is the core error (and essential horror) of contemporary conservative rhetoric.

The most villainous lies are those that are partially true.

The deliberate decontextualization of truth is what makes conservative Christians the most dependably mean-spirited (if not malicious) people on earth, at least in their behavior outside self-chosen parochial tribes.

To take a centuries-old whipping boy (like the one we find in Cosby's acid criticism of dysfunctional blacks), and to beat that whipping boy with renewed vigor is an open invitation for "crackers" to fetch their kloaks from storage.

According to the grisly logic of racial prejudice, many people whose judgments are informed by "team colors" not only feel justified by Cosby's views but chagrined for failing to beat "the niggers" long enough (or hard enough) in the first place. 

 Surely the application of sustained violence will remedy every wrong. 

 Is this not the teaching of The Messiah Himself?

If only white people had continued pummeling "the black bastards," they would have finally "whipped them into shape."

That is Cosby's implicit text - at least in the minds of race-inflamed white people.

The needed context -- in addition to the trans-generational damage wrought by slavery's destruction of The Black Family -- requires a spotlight on Uncle Sam's witless wars in Vietnam and Iraq, coupled with deliberately-induced boom-bust economic calamities, most notably The Great Depression and The Great Recession, the deliberate work of white people who, true to form, sought to profit from their well-practiced art of avarice verging malice.

White people are rarely "called on the carpet," and when they are taken to task, their three piece suits, silk ties and lawyerly jabber ensure that they walk.

They are "too big to fail," "too big to jail".... or some other self-exculpating bullshit.

When I googled Cosby's disparaging rant -- "We Can't Blame White People" -- the first "hit" was Snopes' review -- http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/cosby.asp - followed by a Rense.com article entitled: "Honest Bill Cosby Tells U.S. Blacks The Truth."

"The Party of Angry White People" cannot get enough of "honest" blacks "telling" dishonest blacks "The Truth."

The only thing white trash snorts with equal zeal is crystal meth... just before clutching their "guns and bibles."

If Cosby had grown up on the "wrong side of the tracks," he would have known that moral censoriousness would inspire more ill will among whites than reformation of blacks. 

Of course, the bedrock purpose of censoriousness is to make Pharisees feel good about themselves, not to search for the prodigal son, or - God forbid! - love one's enemies.

Although Cosby himself grew up with the advantages of married parents and a father with a long military career, he himself was a "class clown" who failed 10th grade before dropping out of school. 

Following his father's model, Cosby did a stint in the Navy, got his GED and went on to college. 

It cannot be sufficiently stressed that "the military" has been the nation's most dependable savior of black males.

 In light of this incontrovertible fact, American society would do well to re-institute the "universal draft," or, alternatively, require two years' obligatory national service.


The need for an actual plan - rather than rhetorical flourish and self-righteous rant - is not rocket science.

When was the last time you altered a behavior because some sanctimonious sonofabitch wagged his finger at you?

We presume finger-wagging is a useful technique for "behavioral modification" but experience proves otherwise.

 At the end of the day censoriousness reinforces people's recalcitrance. 

I am always for the underdog and always against those members of The Ruling Class who so stack the deck in their own favor that they assume self-bestowed favoritism is the very Will of God.

The havoc wrought by American blacks (mostly on one another) is vanishingly insignificant in comparison to the havoc wrought by Whitey's war in Vietnam; Whitey's war in Iraq; Whitey's Great Depression (caused by reckless speculation and risible banking procedures); and, finally, Whitey's Great Recession (caused by financial risk that makes "unprotected sex in a whorehouse" look like the safety of Mother Theresa's convent).

If Cosby had contextualized his reproach of dysfunctional black people with simultaneous excoriation of Whitey as the sole cause of the wars in Vietnam and Iraq -- and the sole cause of The Great Depression and The Great Recession -- then I could have "bought the package."

At minimum, Cosby could have done something useful, employing his position and prestige among blacks and whites alike to call for restoration of The Draft or inauguration of two years' National Service.

Then Cosby might have helped high school drop-outs (like himself) by channeling these youngsters-at-risk into The Military, America's most dependable launch pad for stable, productive lives.

But instead of proposing the same path that he himself -- and millions of other blacks -- had taken to personal success (despite early failure) Cosby chose pragmatic showmanship and the sort of smug moralizing that appeals to right-wingers more interested in consigning ner-do-wells to The Inferno than any kind of meaningful redemption.

And f___ the white people who cheer any racial screed that baits Fox-white-people's race-based hatred and bone-deep malice toward anyone outside The Caucasian Fold.

Twenty five years ago, after living most of my life in New York and California, I moved to The South.
Lots of white folk below the Mason-Dixon Line don't speak English none too good themselves.

With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.
 
Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person's problem.
 
We have got to take the neighborhood back.
 
People used to be ashamed. Today, a woman has eight children with eight different 'husbands' -- or men or whatever you call them now.
 
We have millionaire football players who cannot read.
 
We have million-dollar basketball players who can't write two paragraphs.
 
We, as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal- Mart with seven kids... you are hurting us.
 
We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.
 
We cannot blame the white people any longer.

Alan: It is true that the murder rate among blacks is 10 times higher than the murder rate among whites. It is also true that the murder rate among white Americans is 10 times as high as the murder rate among West Europeans. So... Why aren't American whites as contemptuous of their fellow whites as they are of American blacks? And what excuse do these most favored of all people have for being such remarkably violent people -- both interpersonally and in terms of the bellicose havoc they provoke worldwide.

I am sensitive to the issue of cyber-mobbing and deliberately titled my post "Apparent Rapist."

I think this terminology cuts him enough slack.

It is also true that I'm pissed at Cosby for all his right-wing poverty jabber which, at times, describes many black people accurately but is, by my lights, more inaccurate than the rape accusations against him.
