Good science requires that researchers try to prove themselves wrong - in addition to proving what's right. 

In the absence of intellectual rigor, the untrained mind tends to believe truth is determined by subjecting a melange of facts-and-opinions to whatever Procrustean bed prolongs their existing prejudices, or contributes to their political advantage.
