Sudden Decision To Escalate Syrian War and The GOP As Dog Who Finally Catches Car

Among 1400 Syrians gassed to death.
Dear A,

Yesterday, Obama adviser, David Axelrod, said Obama's unexpected decision to let Congress rule on proposed belligerence in Syria has resulted in Republicans being 'the dog that finally caught the car and suddenly has no clue what to do.'

Until now, I have marveled that the GOP -- looking out on the Syrian war -- wants nothing to do with it.

Is this not The Party of Smirk and Snarl

Is this not The Party of Goldwater reborn?

Is this not The Party of Eisenhower toppling Mossadegh?

Overnight, Republicans -- who have NEVER, EVER, seen a war they didn't like -- look more like Gandhi than Attila the Hun.

Two nights ago I said to friend Frances that Obama is such a shrewd politician he probably sees that investing Congress with "the Syrian decision" is the quickest way to launch his sought after strike.

Now, left to their own initiative, congressional Republicans see the Syrian war as the world's largest "sandbox" and all the "armchair soldiers" pile on for "the time of their lives." (Is it true, as it seems, that the decision to use military force is as titillating as the decision by horny sailors -- newly arrived in port -- to lay with the first available wench? "Bang!")

Yesterday, the morning after Obama devolved power to Congress, John McCain and Lindsay Graham were clambering "on board," not only cheering "tactical strikes" but a wide range of military measures whose substantive purpose is regime change and "playing favorites" with rebel forces on the ground.

This morning we learn that Israel and Washington are conducting joint military exercises in the Mediterranean.

Are we surprised?

The tail that refused to wag the dog just 48 hours ago now wags like a Rottweiler in rut.

Pax on both houses,

Alan
