Professor on leave after NRA tweet
A University of Kansas journalism professor was placed on leave Friday for a tweet he wrote about the Navy Yard shootings which said, “blood is on the hands of the #NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters.”
David W. Guth, an associate professor of journalism, made the comment on Twitter after Monday’s shootings in which a gunman killed 12 people. The tweet didn’t attract much attention until CampusReform.org posted a story Thursday, sparking a social media backlash. Some state lawmakers have called for Guth’s dismissal.
University Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little issued a statement Friday saying that “in order to prevent disruptions to the learning environment,” Guth was placed on indefinite administrative leave pending a review. His classes will be taught by other faculty members. Guth agreed Friday that the university’s action was appropriate in light of e-mail threats he and others at the university had received.

Officials at the University of Kansas need to grow a backbone, but I guess the exercise of free speech by anybody who isn't a right wing radical isn't protected any more. While for the sake of safety, going on leave might be prudent, the University should have issued a statement strongly supporting the constitutional right of the proffer to tweet his view point. The response to his tweet is typical of the creeping fascism that the radical right has brought to our once great nation. (Alan: Emphasis mine)
