St. Vincent de Paul
Vincent de Paul CM (24 April 1581 – 27 September 1660) was a French Roman Catholic priest who dedicated himself to serving the poor. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion. Canonized in 1737, Vincent was renowned for his compassion, humility and generosity.

Alan: I chose to write this post because daughter Maria shares a birthday with Vincent, and good friend Minerva Benitez Castillo (who welcomed Maria into her Yucatecan home in the summer of Squeezer's 17th year) is a lay Vincentian who first made me aware of the extraordinary work undertaken by Vincent's collaborator Louise de Marillac.
Minerva, a former nun and civil rights lawyer who defends Mayan people, coordinates a Mayan women's craft cooperative and house of hospitality in a centuries-old home, a kilometer south of Mérida's plaza mayor.

Today, while reading about Vincent's life, inspiration and unquenchable passion for the poor, I was surprised to learn that my Dad's first college, Niagara University, was (and remains) a Catholic college in the Vincentian tradition.
