My Exchange With A Contributor To Fred Owens' Facebook Discussion Of Impeachment

The Trouble With Trumpistas Is Their Unshakable Conviction That Politics Is Best Served By The Posturing, Antics And Cock-Strut Of "Reality | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Z.B.: Okay then. All you positively crazed Trump haters, beware of what you wish for.

He's going to win. But you don't understand that, because you're crazed.

Trust me. I say this as a severe Trump-disliker. This is how he wins.

The ONLY thing that might create a problem for him now is if he actually fires Mueller. Assuming he allows Mueller to complete his investigation, and assuming the Democrats take the House in November, the president will not only keep his job, but he'll win reelection in 2020 - AND - all the things you and I say are bad about the horrible shit he's done to discourse in this country will get worse.

The Democrats, once they take the House, will be forced by you guys (still talking to you, the crazed ones, pay attention, Junior, I'm right over here), their base, to impeach Mr. Trump.

I promise you he's got a metaphorical political (if not actual) boner right now thinking about that. He cannot wait to be impeached.

Why? Because it will create incredible, intense conflict. It will enable him to intensify the hatred of you among his base, thereby allowing you to intensify your hatred of them, and back and forth and so on and WOW what a great show that will be as we all tear each other apart...

...while in the meantime, as it all culminates in his impeachment being finalized and sent to the Senate for trial, Mitch McConnell and his tribe will still be in charge of things (oh, yes they will) and even if the GOP doesn't win an out-and-out majority in November, there is no way that two-thirds of the Senate will become Democrat, which is how many votes would be needed to throw Mr. Trump out of office.

(And lest you imagine that a Democrat-led Senate can change the two-thirds conviction requirement as the Senate has done with so many things lately - that's a big nuh uh - those other changes were to Senate rules only, and the two-thirds conviction requirement is actually IN the Constitution and would take a Constitutional amendment to change.)

It ain't happening, you crazy (mostly) lovable whacked-out wackos. Trump stays.

And hey - looka here! All of that impeachment drama will come to an end right when the election cycle for 2020 is kicking into high gear. And guess who will be back in the saddle, newly-exonerated after (he'll claim) a full year of being persecuted by his enemies, who have made sure nothing has gotten done and I promise you, elect him again and the wall will be built and everybody will be so happy, it'll be great, because we'll make sure that only the best people will be brought in to make sure that those enemies don't get in the way of Keeping America Great, that I can tell you.

And all those regular-Joe voters - you know, the ones you ridicule as if they are less than you? - who came out of the woodwork in 2016 will come out again, and this time they'll be joined by a lot of us who didn't vote for Trump last time - less because they like Trump and far more because they're sick of YOU.

You have one last chance now to call this off and back away slowly. Keep pushing for impeachment, however, and you're going to get four more years of you-know-who...and in the meantime you'll be complicit in whatever further damage is done to national comity.

What'll it be?
Alan: If liberals and progressives resist the seductive temptation to impeach Trump (a fool's errand that will never make it through the Senate), then His Despicability remains free to cause ever more self-induced damage, an ongoing descent into chaos that will only appeal to his 30% red meat Base.
If Democrats exercise self-restraint, the Republican "Old Guard," along with a significant number of libertarians, defect. And a measurable number of opportunistic Trumpistas either "stay home" on election day or "apostasize."
Against this backdrop of proposed restraint -- and, at the moment, Nancy Pelosi seems to "get it" -- Democrats will be well-positioned in 2020 to take back The Oval Office and the Senate.
Furthermore, the nation's current detour into Know-Nothing populism (an intermittent affliction in American politics) will be seen for the fevered wasting disease it is.
