You may remember Iowa’s state Sen. David Johnson as the compassionate conservative who told a teacher to “quit whining” about state funding for public schools. He is now the first elected rat to leave the gold-plated, sinking ship that is the Republican Party over Donald Trump.
Johnson announced that he was changing his registration to No Party after Trump levelled accusations of bias at Judge Gonzalo Curiel, an American judge of Mexican heritage who allowed the release of some unflattering documents from a case against Trump University.
“I haven’t supported Mr Trump at any point along the way but what I am calling his racist remarks and judicial jihad is the last straw,” Johnson told the Guardian.
He also compared Trump’s rise to that of Adolf Hitler’s rise in the 1920s and 1930s. How does the now-former Republican feel about his Speaker, Paul Ryan?
Johnson also condemned his former fellow Republicans such as Paul Ryan who he said are willing to denounce Trump’s comments as racist, but who will still vote for him.“That’s insanity,” Johnson said. “I don’t know how else you put it, I don’t understand what people don’t see happening here.”
