Sen. Ted Cruz endorsed by apparent father of Bristol Palin's latest child

Sen. Ted Cruz has been endorsed by Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer, who was scheduled to marry and apparently fathered the latest child born to Bristol Palin, the daughter of 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.
Meyer is currently suing Bristol Palin for joint custody of daughter Sailor Grace, born Dec. 23, as well as child support. Bristol Palin is making him take a paternity test.
Sarah Palin is a prominent supporter of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The former Marine sergeant, who was about to become Sarah Palin's son-in-law until the wedding was called off last May, has made a different choice.  The Cruz campaign trumpeted the Meyer endorsement.
Of Cruz, Meyer stated:  "His record of standing up and fighting for what he believes in shows that he is not someone who buckles under pressure.  Ted is ready to led (sic) this country -- and I look forward to help uniting conservatives and veterans behind his campaign."
Cruz returned the compliment, saying:  "Dakota is a man of great courage and principle.  He has served his country dutifully and honorably as a sergeant in the Marines.
"I am honored to have Dakota's support and have him as part of our team to help win the White House in 2016."
Meyer will campaign with Cruz this week in South Carolina.
Meyer, a scout sniper in the Marine Corps, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his 2009 heroism in Afghanistan.  He was wounded by shrapnel but repeatedly went in harm's way to evacuate fellow Marines and Afghan soldiers.
The experience under fire may have prepared him for dealings with the Palin family.
He has already been bad-mouthed by Sarah Palin, who told Entertainment Tonight:  "For many months we have been trying to reach out to Dakota Myers (sic) and he wanted nothing to do with either Bristol's pregnancy or the baby."
After the birth of Sailor Grace, however, Meyer posted on Facebook:  "Best Christmas present ever!! I couldn't be more proud of this little blessing."  He posted a hospital picture of the baby girl.
In a complaint filed last month in Superior Court in Alaska, Meyer's attorney said:  "Meyer and Palin had a relationship and were engaged to be married until May 2015."
"Dakota couldn't be more excited to be a new father and be the best dad he can be," his attorney, Kimberlee Colbo, said in a statement to the Marine Corps Times.
Bristol Palin has not addressed the paternity of her newborn daughter.  She has a son, Trip, fathered by another ex-fiance, Levi Johnston.  Johnston wrote a book entitled:  "Deer in the Headlights: My Life in Sarah Palin's Crosshairs."
Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, after a "bromance" on the campaign trail last year, have become bitter and vitriolic rivals for the Republican nomination.
The ultraconservative Texas senator beat Trump in the Iowa caucuses.  Trump prevailed in the New Hampshire primary.  The two are locked in battle going into this Saturday's South Carolina GOP primary.
They will meet again in Texas' March 1 primary.
Although Texas is his home state, Cruz has been rejected by the state's leading newspapers.  The Dallas Morning News has endorsed Gov. John Kasich of Ohio, while the Houston Chronicle and San Antonio Express-News have endorsed Jeb Bush.
