A Friend's Scathing View Of Antonin Scalia
At Scalia's passing, I'm reminded of Clarence Darrow: "I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure." Scalia was an arrogant bigot[1] and mouthpiece for pseudo-Christian fascists.[2] Scalia's compared homosexuality to bestiality, murder, polygamy, cruelty to animals, drug addiction, prostitution, incest, adultery, obscenity, and child pornography.[3] Scalia's most recent opinion is that African Americans belong in "slower" colleges. In the Citizens United case, the most disastrous Supreme Court decision in the modern era, Scalia voted further to erode democracy by ruling that corporations have the same speech rights as people, giving them even greater ability to control the voting process with unlimited "dark" money flowing to bought candidates. Along with Clarence Thomas, Scalia has taken part in the Koch brothers' anti-democratic secret fundraising network. Both of them refuse to recuse themselves from cases involving the Koch empire. Let's not forget the most shameful of his decisions. In Bush v. Gore, Scalia and the other SCOTUS GOP 5 bestowed the presidency on George W. Bush, unquestionably the worse president in US history. Scalia has as rotten a legacy as any pre-Civil War racist judge. We can only hope for better and recall words of a famous judge from Louisville: "We can either have democracy in this country or we can have great wealth concentrated in the hands of a few. But we can't have both." - Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis (1916-39).
1. "There is no basis ... for finding in the Constitution a right to demand judicial consideration of newly discovered evidence of innocence brought forward after conviction." - Herrera v. Collins. At minimum, the Preamble states a purpose of the Constitution is to "establish Justice". Justice was never whatever courts did. It was and remains an ideal for courts to strive to attain.
2. (St. Paul taught and Christians should believe) "...that government ...derives its moral authority from God. Government is the 'minister of God' with powers to 'revenge,' to 'execute wrath,' including even wrath by the sword..." - "God's Justice and Ours", 5/02. Of course, Jesus never said any such thing and taught in contrast about mercy - Matthew 18:21-22, John 8:1, etc.

PS, Someone finally polled the 1%, and it's not pretty.
Look especially at the bottom 3 topics, i.e., job protection, offshoring, and China trade.
