Gregory Bateson On The Enrichment Of Joining Previously Unconnected Rhythmic Patterns

Translation: "Interesting phenomena are produced when two or more rhythmic patterns are combined and these phenomena illustrate precisely the enrichment of information that is produced when one description is combined with another."

Alan: A small point...
The above translation should end "cuando una descripcion se combina con otra."

Here is an alternative translation of the Spanish language Bateson passage, faithful in spirit but not in lexicon and grammar:

"The more harmonies we create in those domains where harmonic resonance did not previously exist, the more satisfying -- and intuitively true -- the experience of that increasingly-layered harmony."

Just as harmonies cross - and cross reference - melodic lines, a disproportionate amount of humankind's work in future is to make ever more connections, particularly in (and among) domains where the possibility of connection was -- until "now" -- literally unthinkable.

The word "preposterous" comes to mind, meaning anything laughable for putting that which normally comes first at the end (or vice versa). http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=preposterous

"Pre" "Posterior."

That said, not all combinations are harmonic.

Nor does all dissonance serve a musical end (at least not that we can acknowledge now).

These exploratory efforts in cross-fertilization enhance our understanding of "the natural world" while creating harmonies with "the natural world" that are, when taken in isolation, "un-natural."

The Creator model of Judeo-Christianity is giving way to the Co-Creation model.
