Conservatives Like The Lazy Virtues: "Making It All Better" With No Need For Actual Government

Alan: This morning, conservative publisher friend, EK, sent the following quotation: “What light is to the eyes - what air is to the lungs - what love is to the heart, liberty is to the soul of man.” Robert Green Ingersoll

"Liberty" -- slippery by definition and easily perverted by "license" -- is a helpful, if not necessary, prelude to optimal human achievement.

Liberty is also a quality that requires little more than formal subscription.

American conservatives revel in facile credos and the "too pure principles" that comprise them.

Such professions of faith are characterized by "lazy virtues" requiring little more than Proclamation.

The Invisible Hand of The Marketplace.

Liberty.

No taxes.

No regulation.

No abortion ... except in cases of incest or rape. (I have never understood why these exceptions don't serve as precedent for everyone's exceptions... morning-after pill, 3rd month of pregnancy, 5th month of pregnancy.)

And of course, motherhood and apple pie.

***

Liberty has special appeal for adolescents breaking away from parental constraint - or nations breaking away from "the established order."

And so liberty -- at least "liberty from" if not "liberty to" -- is central dogma for a belief system constructed by people whose development was arrested in Middle School.
