Albert Einstein’s ‘God Letter’ handwritten a year before his death to auction at eBay starting at $3M
Father of modern physics and the most influential physicist of the 20th century, Albert Einstein, whose great intelligence and originality have made the word ‘Einstein’ synonymous with genius, actually regarded his major achievements as mere stepping-stones for the next advance. This German born theoretical physicist and humanist, who called himself an agnostic, criticized positive atheism, and opted for Spinoza’s god over belief in personal god; is also well known for his religious beliefs which have been collected from interviews and original writings. Now, Albert Einstein’s historic ‘God Letter’ which was handwritten shortly before his death back on 18th April 1955 at the age of 76, and expresses his views on religion, will be auctioned online on eBay from October 8 and 18, 2012, with an astounding opening bid of $3 million.
Offering insights into the private thoughts about religion, tribalism and God of one of the world’s most brilliant minds, this God Letter was written in German on 3rd January 1954, on Princeton University letterhead to renowned philosopher Erik Gutkind, after Einstein read his book ‘Choose Life: The Biblical Call to Revolt.
Notably, the anonymous seller purchased the letter from Bloomsbury Auctions in London in 2008 for $404,000, and since then, it has been stored at a professional academic institution which specializes in the care of cultural heritage collections. The God Letter has been stored in a temperature, and light controlled environment, and will be auctioned with the original envelope, postmark, and stamp.
