Maps: Which U.S. Counties Have The Most Married, Single And Divorced People

 November 17, 2014
FlowingData has created these fascinating maps of America’s relationship status: The counties in the United States with the highest proportion of married, never married, divorced, separated and widowed people. FlowingData says about half of the population aged 15 years or older are married, and this map suggests that a substantial portion of them live in the heartland and Texas. Virginia may be for lovers, but Loving County, Texas (with a tiny population) is for marriage.

When it comes to people who were never married, America has a singles belt that stretches across much of the South and parts of the West, as well as a big chunk of Alaska. The District of Columbia also ranks among the most single counties in the U.S. The southern divorce belt – which also shows up on the “Separated” map – marks an area with higher poverty rates  and less social mobility.
