To understand what’s happening since the Supreme Court let corporations corrupt American democracy, look at Richmond, California. Chevron owns a petroleum refinery in the small city on San Francisco Bay. Now Chevron wants to own City Hall. The oil company has spent at least $3 million to boost an oil-friendly slate of candidates and attack the mayor and city council members. On this weekend’s “Moyers & Company,” Bernie and veteran journalist Bill Moyers discuss what’s happening in Richmond and the impact of the court’s disastrous 5-4 decision in Citizens United which is rapidly converting our democracy into an oligarchy.

Paychecks in America are shrinking. Half of all U.S. workers made less than $28,031 last year, according to a Social Security Administration report on Tuesday. “The American economy continues a 40-year trend in the direction of becoming a Third World country where the vast majority of people struggle to keep their heads above water while the richest people in the country do phenomenally well,” Bernie said. Growing income and wealth income inequality is not just an American issue. The number of billionaires worldwide has more than doubled since the financial crisis, according to a new study by Oxfam, the worldwide anti-poverty organization. The wealth of the richest 85 people increased by $668 million per day in the past year.

In a Congress know for gridlock, it was all the more remarkable that Bernie’s $16 billion veterans bill was passed and signed into law this summer. The law will let the VA hire more doctors and nurses to reduce long waiting times for care. It also is providing new benefits for veterans and their families. As chairman of the veterans committee, Bernie recently joined new VA Secretary Bob McDonald on a recruitment drive at medical schools. He also welcomed the announcement that the VA will take applications in November to provide higher education for the spouses of soldiers who died in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
