Thousands Of Central American Children Desperate To Surrender To Border Guards

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your observation and suggestion.

I don't know why, but I'm not attracted to this issue.

I should be. But I'm not.

The issue of "illegal child immigration" is bigger than "a tempest in a teapot" but I have trouble dedicating my attention to the virulent concerns of 200 people in a California backwater.

In Texas, Rick Perry is rattling sabers, demanding the border be sealed.

But what's to be done with kids who have NO interest in fleeing border agents but instead actively seek them out in order to surrender?

Set up machine gun nests and mow 'em down before they cross?

Hermann Cain notwithstanding, my absurd question points to an inconvenient truth: Often, there are no ready solutions.  http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2011/11/american-barbarians-limbaugh-beck.html

In the background....

Increasingly, I notice that Obama's actual "outcomes" -- in the economy, in financial regulation, in healthcare, in the Ukraine -- are pretty much what Americans "say" they want when they're polled on individual issues, but which they also decry in the aggregate.

Their "better angels" tell them one thing, but residual imperialism awakens their bone-deep desire to "pull out" The Big Stick so Uncle Sam can (presumably) impose his will on a compliantly passive world.

How did The Big Stick work out in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, Guatemala, El Salvador?

Ever notice how Reagan, Dubyah, Romney and Rick Perry are pictured in blue jeans and cowboy hats?

At bedrock, The Republican Party banks on America's Wild West "gene," a quasi-physical force that compels gringos to imagine six shooters, posses and Murietta mobs as solutions to every problem.

It is clear that these illegal Central American children deserve attention and compassion. (Note: Americans will say these kids deserve compassion but in their heart-of-hearts they yearn for policies that kick 'em the ass - preferably all the way back to Central America... without a thought to insuring their family reunion.

Extermination, obliteration, "burial," and denial are always considered Final Solutions.

Speaking of which...

How did the last "Final Solution" work out?

The following interview with a Salvadoran immigrant girl (who grew up in an earlier generation) is enlightening. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2014/07/what-does-it-take-for-salvadoran-girl.html

PS I will not be surprised if the Catholic Church takes the lead housing these kids.

PPS Assuming "the process" doesn't last beyond than next April (when I'm scheduled to be out of country), I would be willing to house an illegal immigrant child.

What is lacking is some extraordinary gesture from one of our leaders.
Nancy Pelosi expresses "concern"  -- big fucking deal. If she invited two or three of these refugees into her home, I would be impressed and even persuaded, otherwise it's going to be machine guns along the Rio Grande.
I think with your background, the Pax blog should focus on this issue
