Alan: To prolong their "out and about" mobility, aging Americans REALLY want driverless cars. In passing, I will also point out that when machines start doing things better than "free" humans can do them, the philosophical underpinnings "conservatism" will undergo radical transformation... or... become the newest incarnation of "The Flat Earth Society."

The president wants cars that talk to each other. Yep, you read that right. "During his visit at the research center, Obama touted work on so-called vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication technology to improve navigation. The technology allows cars, trucks and other vehicles to send real-time information wirelessly, an innovation researchers hope can help reduce accidents and boost fuel efficiency by alleviating traffic. U.S. regulators are already crafting a proposed rule that would require all new vehicles to use the new technology, which could be put in place by early 2017, before Obama leaves office."
