Alan: How many upstanding, church-going Christians would let an itinerant preacher - a guy they meet on the street - rub spit-mud on their eyes?

And how much of the orthodox assumption that Jesus will return in "majesty and glory" is attributable to a psychological need among cautious, rule-following Christians that the messiah be utterly unmistakable when he returns? 

Which begs these questions:
