Quora Question About Roswell And The Making Of A Conspiracy Theory

Originally Answered: What happened in Roswell in 1947?

A ranch hand found some fabric, some metal foil, and some busted up instrumentation out in the countryside.
He didn’t even report it for a couple of weeks.
Later he mentioned it to the Sheriff who also went out and took a look. Noted that some of it said US Army on it so called the nearby base.
The Officer that came out to check saw that it was part of a Classified project to look for Soviet nuclear testing and called in the higher ups.
The Military then arrived in full force, cordoned off the site and recovered all the debris in secret. The Project was highly classified and the locals were told it was just a weather Balloon. It was actually a Project Mogul Balloon.
The ranch hand that originally found the debris speculated out loud to the Sheriff that he wondered if it was one of those crazy “Flying Disks” everyone was talking about. The local newspaper reporter was present and they ran a rather tongue-in-cheek article about the Army capturing a Flying Disk.
That’s it.
That is all that happened and there was never any major case concerning a UFO incident at Roswell.
Until 30 years later.
Three decades after the event, a guy trying to sell books to the gullible masses in love with UFO's and all sort of other weird crap.. took the Roswell account and blew it up, adding all sorts of details and “fact” that were just plain fanciful lies or exaggerations of the truth to the point it no longer resembled the truth at all. THIS became the “Roswell UFO Incident”
