According to a report in the Washington Post, in 2015, there have been at least 43 instances of American toddlers injuring themselves or others with guns. This is the 42th week in the year 2015.
The shootings by 1-, 2- and 3-year-olds have happened in 24 states across the country. Two shootings were reported in Louisiana.
In February Alexis Mercer, a 3-year-old in LeBleu Settlement in Calcasieu Parish, killed herself with a gun her father had reportedly cleaned and left in the living room.
In July a 3-year-old boy in Shreveport reportedly shot himself in the face, but a news report from television station KTBS from that time said the boy was expected to survive.
Though there have been 43 reports this year of toddlers causing serious (or fatal) injuries with guns, Christopher Ingraham, the author of the Washington Post report, doubts that that number means that only 43 toddlers have either picked up guns or pulled the trigger:
"There are likely instances of toddlers shooting people that result in minor injuries and no media coverage," he writes. "And there are probably many more cases where a little kid inadvertently shoots a gun and doesn't hit anyone, resulting in little more than a scared kid and (hopefully) chastened parents."
Folks demanding stricter gun control and laws and people who resist gun control laws don't agree on much, but surely all can agree that guns ought to be kept out of the reach of children.
