At the mobile home park in Midland, a homeowner started his truck then went back inside his trailer.
When he came back outside, there was a man standing there pointing a gun at him, WBTV learned.
The gunman came inside, tied up the homeowner and his 92-year-old mother and beat them before stealing the man's truck and two guns.
The manhunt led to the lockdown of Anson Middle School, and had neighbors in two counties on edge. One neighbor answered a knock on the door by carrying a big stick in her hand.
"My sister called and said they were out there walking the fields, a whole line of them walking the fields out there looking for somebody" one neighbor along Stony Gap Road told WBTV.
"She said two had escaped and one had been shot and the other was still on the loose. I do have dogs out there and one has pit bull in her and if they had come in the fence back there she would have nabbed them."
At 7 a.m., deputies say they two men took off in that stolen black truck from Midland.
A deputy recognized the stolen truck south of Albemarle a short time later. He attempted to stop the truck but the men took off down the highway.
A short time later, deputies saw a man walking across a field near Stony Gap Road and the Stanly County Fairgrounds. When they tried to arrest the man he pulled out a firearm and began firing at law enforcement officers, according to the report.
The suspect jumped in a police cruiser and took off down Highway 52. During the escape, he fired shots at a second deputy.
The suspect refused to stop and was only taken into custody when he crashed the vehicle outside the town of Norwood and Anson County.
He was taken to an area hospital for treatment of several gunshot wounds from his earlier gun battle with deputies.
The Sheriff's Office has identified the man as 30-year-old Jarvis Terez Marsh of Anson County. He was a wanted fugitive for several parole violations. Additional charges are pending.
The other suspect is still on the loose and was last seen in the area of Stony Gap Road and Highway 52.
He is described as a black male wearing a blue button up shirt and dark pants, according to the release.
The investigation is ongoing.
