Mormonism: "Under The Banner Of Heaven" /// Bruce Cockburn

Patriarch Miles Pratt Romney
Mitt Romney's polygamist great-grandfather

Dear T,

I'm reading "Under The Banner Of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer. It is the culmination to my year-long study of Joseph Smith and Mormonism.

"Banner" flashes before your eyes, does everything but turn its own pages. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2012/10/mormonism-is-not-christian-founding.html

I marvel that Christian "fundamentalists" supported Romney -- largely by diligent ignorance of Mormon culture -- and wonder how they will reflect on their self-delusion.

Personally, I see no problem with Romney's candidacy. He was -- by far! -- the best Republican in the entire clownish "field."

What baffles me is how right-wing "Good Christians" could support a "Christian" cultist.

Remarkably, Billy Graham scrubbed his website of its "Mormon Cult Warning" just before November 6th when he - and his appallingly meanspirited son, Franklin - declared their support for Linguine Spine

There is something wrong with Mormon culture and it relates to polygamy and patriarchy.

Notably, Romney's great grandfather fled the United States to co-found a polygamous "mission" in Mexico.  Later, Mitt's Dad lived in this patriarchal enclave before returning, destitute, to the United States. According to Mitt's Mom, George Romney survived immigration by virtue of welfare handouts. Although George Romney had genuine need for welfare, it is now the case that many Mormon country folk -- trans-generational participants in brutal and brutalizing culture -- strategize stem-to-stern parasitizaion of welfare agencies, in large part to support multiple wives and dozens of children.  http://www.boston.com/politicalintelligence/2012/09/19/mitt-romney-father-george-romney-was-public-aid-recipient-child-after-family-fled-mexico/RJOgNPBaAxJkH1vqWVnGDL/story.html

Despite Utah's "picture perfect" quality, the "denied shadow" takes a heavy toll on this most clinically-depressed state in the union with significanlty more women on anti-depressants than anywhere else in America. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/MindMoodNews/story?id=4403731&page=1

Why does "70% Mormon" Utah have twice the national average of depression? http://www.exmormon.org/mormon/mormon521.htm

Why are so many rural Mormons deliberately dependent on welfare?

Read "Under The Banner Of Heaven.”

It reads like an Agatha Christie mystery.

The fellow next to me in my blog photo is Bruce Cockburn, a Canadian musician-composer-singer who provides the "sound track" to my life.

I draw your attention to his most "mystical" song, "Strange Waters."

"Last Night Of The World" is another great song.

Bruce's biography, "Kicking at the Darkness: Bruce Cockburn and the Christian Imagination" is reviewed at http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/01/bruce-cockburn-strange-waters.html

Love

Alan
