Joseph Smith's First Vision at Age 14
Joseph Smith had his first vision at age 14. Allegedly, celestial persons appeared to him: "My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right — and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong, and the personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in His sight: that those professors were all corrupt . . ." (Joseph Smith, History of the Church, vol. 1, p. 5-6)

Ms. Tanner is great, great granddaughter of Brigham Young.

Despite Joseph Smith's sexual predation and his establishment of a non-Christian cult (that pretends to be Christian), I acknowledge that followers of Mormonism are often outstanding, virtuous people and that freedom of religion properly guarantees them the right to subscribe to Mormon beliefs regardless their provenance.
Thomas Aquinas
Chesterton's biography of Aquinas is freely available online at:
I want to be clear at the outset .
I have no objection to Americans voting for any candidate they
choose, regardless religious persuasion or lack thereof.
Hey. I'm voting for the Muslim.
Despite "Prophet" Joseph Smith's sexual predation and
his establishment of a non-Christian cult (that pretends to be
Christian), I acknowledge that followers of Mormonism are often
outstanding, virtuous people and that freedom of religion properly guarantees
them the right to subscribe to Mormon beliefs regardless their provenance.
Still, it is shameful that so many Christian
"conservatives" plan to vote for Governor Romney without researching
his personal formation-and-character.
Research is necessary if only to determine what is "hidden
in plain sight": i.e., Mormonism is not a Christian religion, and founding
prophet, Joseph Smith, was a sexual predator who taught that all Christian
denominations were "abominations" in the sight of God.
Informed consent is essential.
To inform conscience, responsible humans must probe the personal
and cultural contexts of the politicians they elect to represent them.
It is unacceptable to stonewall Truth or to orchestrate
"plausible deniability."
We are responsible for acts of deliberate omission as well as
acts of commission.
Ironically, American Christians rooted in fundamentalist,
literalist and evangelical "traditions" ignore the underpinnings of
their zeal to elect a man belonging to a religious cult founded by a sexual
predator who exhibits the hallmarks of an egotistical scam artist.
Review the following sources and you will understand why Mr.
Romney has been been unwilling to discuss The Church of Latter Day
Saints.

I am baffled that conservative Christians would wish to validate
and normalize a "religion" that contradicts their core beliefs,
unless their unquenchable desire for political power trumps their supposedly
primary relationship with God.
If the Christians who comprise Romney's Base knew
what they were doing by voting for Romney, their religious convictions would
prevent them from doing it.
In fact, if they knew what they were doing, their conscience --
formed by the guiding principles of conservative Christianity -- would recoil
at the thought of voting for Mr. Romney.
More than that, Christian conservatives would actively campaign
against the man.
Make no mistake.
I like Governor Romney and consider his politics preferable to
almost every other Republican in the party.
Ever since The Tea Party snuffed Senator
Dick Lugar in Indiana's primary, Mr. Romney has impressed me as the
"best" Republican in the entire electoral field.
Lamentably, the GOP has been overtaken by epistemophobia, and
under this banner religious conservatives feel threatened by knowledge. http://www.conservapedia.com/Epistemophobia
Many contemporary conservatives want to be lied to - want to
deny any datum (or data-set) that might threaten their beliefs.
Therein lies the rub. And so, the eagerness with which they
deny knowledge -- particularly "inconvenient truths" documented by
rigorous research including dependable research into Joseph Smith's life --
reveals their determination to deny anything without first probing "the
facts."
Dominated by talk radio bombast - and the elevation of opinion
over fact - it has become commonplace for conservatives to dismiss
knowledgeable people as "elitists."
The collapse of rigorous epistemology - and the presumption that
this ongoing degradation-of-Truth is inconsequential - is both
tragedy and disaster, the kind of tectonic shift that collapses empires.
Aquinas is not just rolling in his grave. He is spinning with
enough force that, if harnessed, the planet would enjoy an abundance
of clean energy forever.
Every conservative who reads this email will recognize its
substantive truth.
But none of them will forward it to anyone on their mailing
list.
Notably, my friends will forward anything we receive from
conservatives, but conservatives will forward nothing they receive from us.
This craven complicity in "letting lies stand" begins
when people lie to themselves.
It is time for America to catch up with Tommaso
d'Aquino's 13th century.
