Correspondence With Friend F: Senator Susan Collins' Floor Speech Defending Kavanaugh

Dear F,

Thanks for your email.

It is precisely because "presumption of innocence" is a worthy principle that can exempt Kavanaugh (even though you and I believe it much more likely Blasey Ford) that it is necessary to base our opposition on what is provable.

Kavanaugh is, provably, a liar.

In the last month, he has lied often... and under oath.

What human being with even a few functioning synapse wants a "Supreme" who lies, out of self aggrandizement, under oath. Without a care... and often.

Trump's assault on Truth has made us all undervalue the linchpin centrality of Truth. As Pilate, weighed down by the cares of the world, put it: "Truth. What is truth?"

When Jesus identifies himself in the gospels, he says "I am the way, the truth and the life."

Trump, on the other hand, identifies himself thus:

"I am the Seven Deadly Sins" (most particularly Greed, Lust, Wrath and Envy).

"I am The Lie."

"I am the epitomization of corporal besottedness, a soul sold believer in those purchasable pleasures whose purpose (in the capitalist scheme of things) is to distract us from the transcendent joy of living.

Try to imagine Trump (and his diehard followers) delighting in a life of service; in wonder, reverie and the Magnum Mysterium; in exaltation of spirit; in anything greater than his friends and enemies list... a "man" shot through with stupefying passion for rewarding "faith" in his bloated, self proclaimed grandeur, a "man" suffused with a passion to punish anyone who crosses his self apotheosized, solipsitic self.

America's core crisis is epistemologial.

Trump's "fake news," "alternative facts" and "conspiratorial thinking" comprise the nouveau Trinity, a deity consistent with Hitler's dictum: "Through the skillful and sustained use of propaganda, one can make people see even heaven as hell and hell heaven."

And so it is that "conservative" "Christians" (ever eager to believe consoling fantasies) see this loathesome "man" as their savior; the sine qua non of patriotism; the indispensable agent of America's moral restoration.

And to the extent that these lickspittles "Put America First" they steadily transform us into the shithole country they project onto nations whose people are black, brown or bronze.

By any measure, our current state is beyond bizarre.

The silver lining is that when Trump crashes and burns, conservative Christianity (already self sullied) crashes and burns with him.

Republican presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan, the living American who has served longest as a White House senior staff adviser, observed: “The Republican philosophy might be summarized thus: To hell with principle; what matters is power, and that we have it, and that they do not.” “Where the Right Went Wrong"

I think Collins made  this case (for Kavanaugh) in her  dreams. A big fat rationalization. She gave him "presumption of innocence" instead of, as Trump directed, "no doubt." She gave him the benefit of doubt.
She didn't do the same for Franken when she called for him to resign and denied his request for an ethics investigation.
As Murkowski said, he's a good man but the wrong man for this time. That eliminates presumption or doubt. Instead of rationalization, it's reasonable.

... ultimately... the sexual assault claim (and denial) enable people to come down on either side of the fence.

But the fact that the weasly sonofabitch repeatedly lied under oath is as disqualifying as it is incontrovertible.
