TDL: Try to imagine the response a couple of years back, if Peter Fonda had said Obama’s children should be kidnapped and given to pedophiles to be raped (and been given wide coverage for saying it) or DeNiro had yelled “F**k Obama!” at the academy awards. The evil coming from the left today is not merely political disagreement. Preface: Based on the recent Supreme Court decision permitting a baker to refuse preparation of a wedding cake on grounds of conscience, it is predictable - and apparently admirable - that "people of conscience" refuse to prepare food for people whose actions they consider immoral.

Mind you, there is no way for a baker to determine if a same sex marriage would be consummated - or remain platonic - but, for the moment, I will not split that important hair.

On the other hand, we do know that separating children from their parents is traumatizing and abusive, and despite Trump's brazen lie, there was no "Democrat" law -- or any other law -- that required family separation.

It was a stupid, crude, impolitic thing to say.

But against the backdrop of "family separation," Fonda's first two images provide an eyeopening parallel between separated Hispanic families and Melania Trump's "bubble-dwelling" gold-plated-toilet-seat family.

It is also true that Fonda's reference to pedophilia was over the top.

But consider this.

If your 13 year old daughter was detained at an unknown location a thousand miles away, wouldn't the prospect of pedophilia haunt you?

Nugent, on the other hand -- imbued with the same reprobate cockiness as Cheater-in-Chief -- will never apologize.

Like His Satanic Majesty, Nugent will double down, triple down, quadruple down - even when he knows he told a whole-cloth lie at the outset.

Conservatives -- long accustomed to feigning Christianity -- lather themselves with hearsay, anecdotes, frank falsehoods and exceptions-to-rules. And after chowing down on this smorgasbord of falsehood, they proceed to do their damnedest to morph anecdotal outliers into "New Rules."

Statistical truth - which is to say scientific truth - doesn't work that way.

Who knows if any progress can be made with people whose hero says "global warming" is a "Chinese hoax to make American manufacturing non-competitive?" Or whose chief spokeswoman says that "microwaves turning into cameras is just a fact of modern life."

If we do not have a "Standard of Truth, or at least a standard for identifying bald-faced lies and wacky conspiracy theories like "birtherism" and Hillary operating a juvenile "whore house" in the basement of a New Jersey pizzaria, all is lost. (How convenient that American conservatives play the "conspiracy card" -- or conjure "Deep State" vility -- whenever Truth backs them into a corner.)
