Fred: Reading immigration stories....it was never easy. My great-grandmother came here from France in 1850 when she was only ten. Her father died, leaving her in the care of her stepmother who left her to work as a servant girl someplace in Iowa. This new family sort of adopted her, but she was a long way from her home village in France and only ten.....this did not defeat her and she married my great-grandfather seven years later and they built a good family and business..... It's possible to become an American but it's never been easy.
