Alan: There are many strong arguments for prolonging the obligation that high school students read all ten books on the list below.
However, if the goal of high school English curricula is to insure that students read books that are not only good but also fire the desire to read even more, it is our great good luck that there are hundreds of top-notch novels to motivate students more than most of the "old standards," many of which only sour young readers on reading.
