"This Meme Needs To Go Viral" - Follow-Up Discussion With A Twice Medevaced Vietnam Marine

Dear T,

Thanks for your email.

I'm not talking about a military coup.

I'm talking about a simple declaration of truth.

Gandhi, Truth And The Irrepressible Power Of Satyagraha

If a mortal enemy is inside the gates, should that fact not be pointed out?

I remember sonofabith Westmoreland appearing on the nightly news - year after year - brazenly lying to the nation that we must sacrifice ever more American blood and treasure to fight an enemy who was not, in fact, an enemy - unless patriotic defense of one's country against foreign invasion makes one an enemy. (Ironically, General C once told me that "Old Ho was a real patriot and a friend of the United States. During World War II - when I was stationed in China - we could always count on Ho to get to remote American plane crash sites before anyone else, certainly before we could.")

I understand that there is considerable justification behind "chain of command."

I also understand that, currently, chain of command culminates in a megalomaniac narcissist (and probable sociopath), a thinly-veiled thug aided and abetted by accommodating Republicans who control Congress. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2017/07/yesterday-i-published-meme-about-trump.html

As I see it, manifest lunacy seems to "break the chain."

Again, I am not calling for a coup.

Rather, I ask whether military officials - who know Trump is nuts and works alongside Chief Strategist Bannon to design the de-construction of essential American institutions - should weigh in on this subversive madness (straight out of Breitbart and right-wing conspiracism) so that "the people," along with lickspittle representatives in Congress would have kleiglight opportunity to recognize the true nature of America's existential peril rather than plod, day by day, ever deeper into Deplorable Donald's Blizzard of Bullshit, where by "innocent" increments the national psyche slowly accommodates monstrosity as normalcy.

Perhaps most alarmingly, Trump claims to "know more than the generals."

Against this backdrop of bombast and trumpery, it is possible (likely?) that enough Americans will prefer Trump to Truth so that even warning by the generals will go unheeded.

To avoid your concern over a coup, perhaps a high-ranking general-patriot could declare Trump a "national security threat" and immediately retire. (What if Westmoreland had done something similar?)

I wonder if your conclusion that simple "statement of truth" is equivalent to a "military coup" might be influenced by the dead weight of Trump's ongoing re-definition of reality so that, swayed by the zeitgeist, we unconsciously defend the sonofabitch and his redefinition of "normality."

In the late sixties I studied Denis de Rougement at the University of Toronto and was struck by his analysis:

There are two ways of lying, as there are two ways of deceiving customers. If the scale registers 15 ounces, you can say: "It's a pound." Your lie will remain relative to an invariable measure of the true. If customers check it, they can see that they are being robbed, and you know by how much you are robbing them: a truth remains as a judge between you. But if the demon induces you to tamper with the scale itself, it is the criterion of the true which is denatured, there is no longer any possible control. And little by little you will forget that you are cheating.

Every day, we move "little by little" toward "forgetting that we are cheating."

In recent days, another pertinent question has come to the fore.

Is it possible that Trump's new Chief of Staff, General John Kelly could, as time goes on, represent something like "a collaborative coup" in which "the generals" don't "seize" power but are invited to "take" power.

At bedrock, the nation is passing through an epistemological crisis in which Truth is held in contempt so that dimwit twits can hunker down in their ideological silos, pretending (as Isaac Asimov put it) that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."
