Alan: Yesterday, brother Kevin forwarded an email from a rabid right-wing friend.
His missive featured an article entitled "NEWSWEEK IS GOING OUT WITH A BANG!!!" and went on to say that "the liberal Newsweek Magazine is going out of business, but not before it attacks the President. This is quite an article, even more so when you consider that NEWSWEEK finally had the guts to admit it. WOW! Newsweek COVER!!! It is their last cover before they fold. AMAZING!!!
The Newsweek "cover" "makes clear" that this is "the real deal."
Except... it isn't.
To be sure, "Hit The Road Barack" was written by a fellow named Matt Patterson.
But "Hit The Road Barack" was not published in Newsweek.
Rather, it was published on the conservative opinion website, "American Thinker."

Subsequently, an anonymous Trickster photoshopped the fake Newsweek cover (above) and immediately a flood of fellow conservatives -- determined to be deceived with the same passion that drives them to deceive -- availed themselves of ever-ready right-wing email channels to create a cause célèbre reminiscent of Nazi Germany's 1930s propaganda machine.
In Christian moral theology, it is commonly believed that humans bear moral responsibility only for those actions undertaken with an informed conscience.
And so, to avoid moral responsibility, it has become commonplace among American conservatives to keep themselves in the dark.
To achieve this self-imposed benightedness, it is remarkable how few conservatives resort to trustworthy debunking organizations like www.Snopes.com

Lamentably, widespread refusal to research Truth has been normalized by the following conservative characteristics.
1.) Among Christian conservatives, we witness perpetual damage caused by St. Paul "The Apostle" who persuaded "the intellectually lazy" to double down on their innate indolence by preaching that "the world's wisdom is folly in the eyes of God." And so, whatever Christian conservaties perceive to be truth is deemed to be "God's Truth," while any "inconvenient truth" is deemed to be worldly folly. Convenient? No?
2.) On the secular side of the conservative coin, we witness wholesale dismissal of of relatively reliable information sources -- such as The New York Times -- and the replacement of these sources with grossly distorted misinformation, whole-cloth lies and conspiracy theorizing.
If you don't like -- or are threatened by -- a particular truth, no problem.
Just subscribe to "Any Damn Thing." There is, for example, a widespread belief that the slaughter of two dozen 5 year olds at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton, Connecticut was part of a larger conspiracy to stage "apparent" acts of firearm carnage in order to persuade Americans to oppose Second Amendment Rights.

American conservatives are, in fact, hostile to Truth because any contrary truth -- anthropogenic global warming for example -- which penetrates the armor of their Authoritarian Absolutism collapses the entire structure of Absolutism.
If God is conceived as Truth -- such as the syllogistic proposition set forth in John's Gospel, https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+14:6 -- the permanent posture of American conservatives is to squat over The Face of God, shitting in his mouth, shouting "Down Truth! Down!"
Although the following observation by Carl Jung leads to a discussion beyond the scope of this post, Jung contradicted (or at least qualitatively modified) the standard western view of moral responsibility by arguing that it is incumbent on human beings to take reasonable steps to become conscious of their moral situation, and that failure to strive after expanding consciousness makes those individuals who remained deliberately ignorant morally responsible for the outcome of their ignorant behavior.
Notably, human jurisprudence does not exculpate "the ignorant."
Nor are we exempted from painful consequences when -- subject to a hallucinatory belief in our personal impugnity -- we ignore "The Law Of Gravity," and jump off The Golden Gate Bridge.

I received a email forward with “Newsweek Cover” in the subject line and the above photo in the email with the title “The Cover of Liberal Newsweek Magazine”
Here’s some of the text in the email…
“Finally, Matt Patterson and Newsweek speak out about Obama. This is timely and tough. As many of you know, Newsweek has a reputation for being extremely liberal. The fact that their editor saw fit to print the following article about Obama and the one that appears in the latest Newsweek, makes this a truly amazing event, and a news story in and of itself. At last, the truth about our President and his agenda are starting to trickle through the “protective wall” built around him by the liberal media…. ‘Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall”
This article was Obama bashing at it finest which I’m sure delighted all the Obama haters who received it. Problem is, like most of the Republican propaganda out there… IT’S FALSE.
This article never appeared in Newsweek. The real name of the article is called ” The Affirmative Action President”. It was written by Matt Patterson and appeared in aconservative opinion web site called American Thinker on August 18, 2011.

Another dead give-away… take a close look at the Newsweek cover. The article title is “Hit the road Barack” by Niall Ferguson, not “Matt Patterson”.
The article by Niall Ferguson was a completely different article than the one posted in the email forwards.
So for those of you who care about the facts, if you receive a copy of this email forward, you might want to tell the person who sent it to you that it’s a hoax.
