"What You Need To Know About The Man Who Claims To Be Pope"

Alan: Sedevacantism is a movement within "Traditionalist Catholicism" which holds that St. Peter's "chair" is "vacant."

According to sedevacantist logic, "Pope Francis" is an impostor.

Sedevacantists consider Francis (whom they routinely call "Bergolio") an apostate who is not even Catholic.

Despite their apparent erudition, sedevacantists impress me as unhinged people who make the essential mistake of valuing ecclesial "forms" as The Heart of Catholicism while paying scant attention to Jesus' ministry as rabbi/teacher/healer and moral model.

Sedevacantists "play at religion" like a certain kind of "good" student "plays at school."

They get "good grades" but miss the point.

In my limited reading of sedevacantist literature, it seems that the New Testament is cited to validate church authority, structure and tradition while ignoring the heart of The Good News.

Sedevacantists value vengeance, punishment and Shylockian justice over love, mercy, compassion and forgiveness.

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."

Reality Check:
  • On Sins against the First Commandment - Superstition:"God may be wrongly worshiped either by false worship or by superfluous worship being paid Him. . . . The ceremonies and practices of the Jewish religion signified that the Messiah was to come, and so now, after the coming of Our Lord, they could not be employed without superstition [=false worship]. Inasmuch as falsehood in religion is a grave injury to God, this species of superstition is mortally sinful."
