Finns give Spanish a lesson in thrift
The Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen flew to Madrid last Tuesday in the tourist class of a regular scheduled flight. The conservative daily ABC sees this as an example for Spanish politicians to follow: "It was a business trip but the Finnish politicians don't use private or military aircraft unless it's an emergency.
… And the Finnish state uses fewer official cars than any of our regions. Not because of the crisis or a certain austerity measure but out of principle. It prefers to spend the money on its model education system. Katainen is not impressed by the fact that the EU is giving financial assistance to a country where even the most insignificant local politician travels around followed by a troop of advisers in a fleet of official cars. …
We lack the credibility to ask help of those who have themselves been cutting back not out of necessity, but out of consideration for others and conviction."
