On June 5th, 2005 in a small Oregon college town thought to be a ‘good place to raise kids’ a three year old girl was tortured and killed. Her name was Karly Sheehan. The boyfriend of Karly’s mother is serving time for the murder. Alan here... I was surprised to learn that
mothers are disproportionately involved in the abuse of their children.
Mothers are also disproportionately favored by American courts so that the parent more likely to abuse is usually the parent who gets custody. As in
other domains of social well-being, the United States lags all other developed
nations. If measured by what Americans actually do (as distinct from what their pharisaic preachments) Americans care little for their children and less for supporting the integrity of families. In the same time that 6500 American troops have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, 20,000 American children - most of them under 5 years of age - have died from abuse and neglect.
