Alan: Logically, what is to prevent a conservative Christian ambulance driver from refusing to tend a severely injured gay person? 

According to conservative Christians, gay people are in "open rebellion" against God and are already destined -- by God Himself -- to spend eternity in a "Lake of Unquenchable Fire."

To refuse emergency care to "the damned" is nothing in comparison to what Christianity's God-of-Love has in store.

In fact, if we humans are "made in the image of likeness of God," then no punishment meted out by mere mortals comes close the divinely-ordained torment of Hell.
