Evil Conceived As Necessity, Even Duty

Alan: Lacking the imagination to see themselves compounded of good and evil, fundamentalists indulge ignorance and its evil twin, "innocence," thus becoming satanic - from the Greek "satanas" meaning "accuser," "adversary," "plotter," "obstructionist," "slanderer," "adversary." Confident that they alone are "good" and "saved" and that "the others" are "evil" and "damned," they not only wish to impose their ideals and standards, but feel that God Himself obliges them to do so.
The situation recalls the old comedic line, "The devil made me do it."

Only now, God (not Satan) is seen as the agent who forces them to deny personal responsibility.
