Alan: American conservatives are so determined to defend their ignorance that they would have us believe (in order to have themselves believe) that learning is not only meaningless but a fit object for ridicule.
This ostentation display of ignorance -- indeed aggressive, boastful, evangelical ignorance -- is, ultimately a defense of intellectual indolence, a laziness befitting couch potato channel surfers who are desparate to believe that their Know-Nothing Nativism is the very nub of enlightenment.
It is often said that those of us who are educated behave superciliously and "don't listen" to the disenfranchised white people.
While there is "something" to that argument, it is overwhelmingly true that what white people say about politics, conspiracy theories, vaccination-contempt, gun regulation and other matters of the mind is so benighted that most of it doesn't deserve a listening.
I do not suggest that undue academic demands should be made on ignorant white people.
However, to deserve a place at the table, they must become intellectually potty-trained so that they can contribute something other than feces-flinging.
Educated people with minds trained to understand-and-appreciate The Scientific Method and to apply the disciplines of intellectual rigor are the citizens who need to be heard most.
Left to their own devices, ignorant white people will be the ruin of American democracy, open society, political compromise, legal guarantees of racial and ethnic equality and every other good rooted in The European Enlightenment.
