Dear Fred,
It's good to hear from you.
I hope you will comment on your 70th birthday party - perhaps in Frog Hospital...
I think Pope Francis has entered a period of consolidation.
While things "gel," the pontiff is making clear his refusal to tolerate Catholic fundamentalism which he rightly considers a form of idolatry.
It is a source of ongoing wonderment that fundamentalists seldo prioritize the words Yeshua actually spoke but instead obsessive (always a sign of psychological derangement) over "red button" issues The Master never addressed - among them, abortion, homosexuality and race?
Fortunately, it is easy to "take the test."
Hey Christian!

Catholics are not known for "reading/interpreting the bible": traditionally, we have left these functions to the mediation of priests.
But if you actually read the bible - in conjunction with commentary by accomplished exegetes - it is soon clear why protestants protested.
As is true in most "religious matters," the question of "biblical interpretation" comes down to differing views of authority.
Not surprisingly, every "band" on this infinitely-subdivided spectrum is unwaveringly CERTAIN that its interpretation is absolutely true and the interpretation of most/all others is false. (Although it must remain the topic of another essay, I hold that The Catholic-Protestant Schism made all subsequent magisterial teaching "invalid" - at least as it relates to infallibility - because Rome had amputated an intrinsic part of itself, thus making complete conciliar collegiality impossible.)
When you bring this "infinite-subdivision of self-certain (and self-serving) theologies" to the attention of "the infinitely sub-divided," they only marvel at the stupidity/perversity/ignorance of "the others."

Here is how this divisive doctrinal Mechanism works: "I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! Don't do it!" "Why shouldn't I?" he said. "Well, there's so much to live for!" "Like what?" "Well... are you religious?" He said yes. I said, "Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?" "Christian." "Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant ? "Protestant." "Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?" "Baptist" "Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?" "Baptist Church of God!" "Me too! Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you reformed Baptist Church of God?" "Reformed Baptist Church of God!" "Me too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915?" He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915!" I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off. Emo Philips
At the end of the following "bibliography" is a cluster of blog links concerning "authority," starting with "What Is An Ecumenical Council?" - the rather hum-drum title of a well-considered article that cuts to the quick.
