Courage Is The Ability To Live With Ambiguity.

A popular quote often mis-attributed to Aristotle has the ancient philosopher identifying the defining characteristic of intelligence as the “ability to entertain a thought without accepting it.”

In similar vein, Chesterton says (and here I cite from memory) that the ability to imagine our enemy is the cornerstone of liberalism.


Conservatives, on the other hand, think their chief obligation is to provide resounding condemnation whenever they feel challenged to be merciful or compassionate.
