Here where Baltimore Civil Rights Attorney A. Dwight Petit whose tried dozens of cases of police brutality and murder states that police murders and cover ups are not that uncommon.
“It’s the same defense — we know what the defense is going to be,” Pettit said. “The police officer’s going to say that, ‘I thought he was reaching,’ or, ‘I saw something that looked like a weapon, and so therefore, I was in apprehension of bodily injury or death, and so I reacted instantly.’”
He said those claims nearly always help officers escape prosecution in the fatal shootings of unarmed suspects – even when eyewitness accounts contradict police.
Pettit recalled one case he tried a decade ago where police shot a handcuffed suspect in the head.
“I’ll never forget it,” he said. “One of the witnesses on the stand, when I took her deposition, she said, ‘Mr. Pettit,’ she said, ‘I saw it. I was standing in my porch, on my porch in my doorway, (and) I saw them shoot him in the back of the head.’ She said, ‘I turned to run for the telephone to call the police, and all of a sudden it dawned on me — it was the police.’ I mean, horrific.”
Here's a bit more on this line Via TYT and Fox News

Fox News Guest: It used to be standard operating procedure. I hate to say it but [Cops] would keep a second gun, on their ankle, to drop when they kill people.
So it's not just me, black people, or progressives saying that police have long had a reputation for covering-up or lying during and after a shooting, it's someone on Fox News.
Here's a case where Virginia Police violently assault a hand-cuffed Black Veteran - a former Marine - and then try to charge HIM with assault.
Video shows an Orange County sheriff’s deputy throwing Fitzgerald onto the four-lane highway, but there is no audio during that segment due to what has been described as a malfunction.
The footage also partially shows Fitzgerald’s head repeatedly hitting the patrol car’s hood – but the deputy claims Fitzgerald intentionally did that to himself.
Fitzgerald said he did not remember what happened at that point, but suffered a chipped tooth and facial injuries as a result.
Authorities said that Fitzgerald struggled until officers “placed him on the ground and restrained him,” but he denies fighting with police.
For some reason even though there is audio for the rest of the tape, the audio during this section of tape is missing.  Even though there were 7 dash-cam cameras present, only footage from 1 of them has been made available.  Again, without audio.
The Deputy claimed, under oath, that Fitzgerald after being pulled over for flashing his high-beams refused to sign a summons, locked his door and refused to get out forcing the Officers to physical remove him from the car, yet the video clearly shows Fitzgerald voluntarily opening his own car door and standing up when requested.  They the hand-cuff him and after he's hand-cuffed began violently twisted his arms.  According to Fitzgerald he complained about this loudly and after his third complaint they threw him down face first into the middle of the highway.
And you really can't say any of this happened because Fitzgerald was "wearing a hoodie" or had his "pants sagging" and that gave police reason to be suspicious and physical with him?  He was wearing a tuxedo on his way back from a business event.
These Cops LIED.
These are of course newer examples, but there are older ones.
In the Tamir Rice shooting police said that they had warned Rice to "Put down the gun" at least 3 times, and that he was approached a group of people and had "reached for it" anyway forcing them to shoot.  The video shows that Tamir was completely alone in the park playing with a toy gun and that Officers shot him within 2 seconds of arriving.
Police also claimed they gave Rice CPR at the scene when in fact, they didn't. Just like Fitzgerald they let him lie on the ground, after they handcuffed him, until paramedics arrived.
These Cops also LIED.
In the police shooting of John Crawford in Beavercreak OH, police claimed they had demanded Crawford "drop the gun" - which as with Tamir Rice was only a toy pellet gun which he'd simply picked up from the shelves a few aisle away - and that he was "brandishing it" pointing it at fellow customers but the video shows that he was actually had it swinging at his side pointed at the ground a police only gave him about 2 seconds before they fired and killed him.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Wednesday afternoon that it would launch an investigation into the fatal shooting.
Police said Crawford refused to drop the air rifle, but his father and the family’s attorney said the video, which they were permitted to view before the grand jury, directly contradicted the official story.
They said the video showed Crawford talking on a cell phone while leaning on the toy rifle like a cane when officers approached from behind.
The family’s attorney said it did not appear that Crawford ever heard their commands to drop the toy weapon before he was “shot on sight.”
Assistant Hamilton County, Ohio, Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier presented the case as a special prosecutor.
He showed portions of the video during a news conference announcing the grand jury decision Wednesday, with audio from the 911 call synchronized with Crawford’s actions inside the store.
Crawford never waved the toy gun or appeared to point the weapon at anyone, but he did walk briefly with the air rifle resting on his shoulder.
He was shot almost immediately after officers spotted him at the end of an aisle, the video shows.
Again Police claims which were placed in their official reports, were lies and did not match what was shown on the tape.
In the case of the Police Shooting of Darrien Hunt in Salt Lake City it was claimed he was carrying "A sword" and that he "brandished it" as if to attack police.  The fact of the matter is that it wasn't actually a sword it was a wall decoration with blunted edged that couldn't cut and when police confronted Hunt the most logical thing for him to do wasn't attack them with a blunt stick, but rather show them that it was in fact, blunt.
Police claims that he rushed to "attack" are belayed by this still photo of them talking calmly just before the shooting.
Seconds after this Hunt fled with - according to witness descriptions - "two short sticks" in  his hand, which logic dictates were the blunted sword and it's scabbard.  Seconds after that he was shot dead - hit six times in the back - just outside the Panda Expresses he had been taking the decoration too in hopes of getting a job.
Again as shown by these surveillance tapes, the cops initial claim that Hunt "lunged" at them forcing them to shoot - was wrong.  Or a lie.  Or something. He ran and you can see police chasing him below.
These make it fairly clear that Hunt was not a threat to these Officers, they were a threat to him.  And they lied about it.
One last example: Sargent James Crawley Lied on his Police Report when he arrested Professor Skip Gates for the "crime" of breaking through his own stuck front door.
We're asked to put our trust in Police.  We are asked to expect them to be the ones to help us when we're in need, when we're desperate and when we're helpless.  We're supposed to give them the highest in deference because their job is difficult - even if it doesn't even rate in the top ten most dangerous jobs in the country - it's still hard so we're supposed to give them the benefit of the doubt.  There are times when any person can make a mistake, any person can be honestly wrong at almost any time.
But when the stakes are life and death?
And they seem to get it wrong, in exactly the same way over and over again?  The subject was a threat, didn't respond to repeated commands that were given in less than a faction of a second, even when already handcuffed, they "tried" to get or take the officers weapon - even though they never seem to actually get that weapon -  they were "brandishing" a toy, the officers "feared for their lives" even when the subject is in fact - RUNNING AWAY?
In most of these cases, there were no charges filed against these officers even when clear video that contradicts their claims was made available.  No indictment for the Officers who killed Tamir Rice, or John Crawford, or Darrien Hunt.
These cases aren't all exactly the same, but they aren't really different enough IMO.
Are these isolated enough to be trivial?  Are we blowing things out of proportion to focus on them?  Well, lets just think of this - the best numbers we have show that More Black Americans were shot by Police in 2014 - just that one year - than died during 9-11.
Here’s how we know that. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were 215 black victims of the 9/11 attacks (136 men, 79 women). The CDC even has data on education — 109 of those victims had college degrees.
...
But based on a count of news stories collected at KilledByPolice, there were at least 238 deaths of black Americans by police in 2014, easily more than the number who perished on 9/11.
That fact ought to give anyone pause.  Sadly, for some, it won't even give them a comma.

6:18 PM PT: I have to apologize that I didn't initially include this, because I've met the mother of this particular victim in person, but Police also lied after they shot and killed Kendrec McDade in Pasadena.
At a press conference Wednesday in Pasadena, California, police announced that they have arrested a man who called 911 earlier this week, claiming he’d been robbed a gunpoint by two black teens. Police responded to the incident with deadly force, killing 19-year-old college student Kendrec McDade after he fled from officers.
The 911 caller, Oscar Carillo, allegedly admitted under questioning that he lied about the firearm to trigger a faster police response.
Police claim that once they cornered McDade, he reached for his waistband. Believing he was armed, two officers opened fire and hit the teen multiple times. He died a short time later at Huntington Hospital.
Speaking to reporters, Pasadena Police Chief Philip Sanchez insisted that the 911 call had “set the minds of the officers,” who were then looking for someone matching McDade’s description.
These officers actually claimed more than just they saw McDade "reach for his waistband" they originally said they thought he fired at them, and that they'd actually seen the muzzle flash.  But McDade, like so many others, was unarmed and was not given aid but immediately handcuffed by officers until paramedics arrived.
He also hadn't committed a robbery, of anyone.
