Colbert's Hilarious Take On Bigots Freaking Out Over Coca Cola's Super Bowl Ad

Last night, Stephen Colbert brilliantly lampooned the bigoted right-wing outrage that came about from people seeing the Coca-Cola ad featuring "America the Beautiful" being sung in multiple languages during the Super Bowl.

But folks, the real reason I watched the game is to see the ads.  Last night, you had all the big names — Budweiser, Ford, Radio Shack.  But really, only one commercial mattered, a truly nutty ad... (massive audience cheering and applause) that drove the country nuts.  I'm talking, of course, about Coca-Cola.  Their commercial certainly got my fellow conservatives' blood bubbling.

RUSH LIMBAUGH: How about the Coca-Cola commercial?  You've heard the Coca-Cola commercial in the Super Bowl?

SUNLEN SERFATY, CNN: The Coke commercial also sparked some controversy.

ILONA CARSON, ABC13 KTRK: (reading online comment) "The coke commercial was a slap in the face to America!"

ERIC BOLLING: You ticked off a lot of Coke drinkers.  You ticked off a lot of Americans. ... Coke, you blew it with a lot of people.

Yeah, they blew it with me, and I didn't even see the ad.  I mean, for some reason, they ran it when the game was already over — the second quarter.  (audience laughter)  So, Jim, I'll tell you what, in fairness, gimme a taste.

(Stephen screams in agony)

(audience cheering and applause)

They were singing "America the Beautiful" in foreign talk!  I mean, come on, only English can give that song its certain je ne sais quoi!  (audience cheering)  Folks, last thing I want to be is a prima donna, but I am full of schadenfreude over this!  And I am not the only one who's outraged.  Ex-Congressman and former employable person Allen West anger-blogged:

ALLEN WEST (2/2/2014): It started rather patriotically with the words of "America the Beautiful".  Then the words went from English to languages I didn't recognize.

(audience laughter)

Yes.  This man once represented Florida, and then served in Iraq.  How is he supposed to recognize Spanish and Arabic?  (audience laughter)

And, the website the Breitbart.ca's Michael Leahy truly captured why we're so angry, saying that:

MICHAEL LEAHY (2/2/2014): The company used such an iconic song, one often sung in churches on the 4th of July that represents the old "E Pluribus Unum" view of how American society is integrated, to push multiculturalism down our throats.

Yes, the old "E Pluribus Unum".  That's Latin for "Speak-a da Englis".  (audience laughter)  And Leahy points out it's not enough that they sang...

MICHAEL LEAHY (2/2/2014): ... a deeply Christian patriotic anthem whose theme is unity — in several foreign languages ... the ad also prominently features a gay couple.

For Pete's sake, since when are gays allowed to gay up "America the Beautiful"?  I mean, if the woman who wrote the song, Katharine Lee Bates, saw this ad, she would be disgusted, and so would her life partner Katharine Coman, with whom she lived for 25 years in what was then referred to as a "Boston marriage".  (wild audience cheering and applause)

Folks, that was not a gay marriage.  It was the 19th century.  Women could not be lesbians back then, OK?  They couldn't even vote — or as lesbians call it, scissoring. (audience laughter)

Well that's it, America.  I am officially removing Coca-Cola from the All-American meal, which as we all know is hot dog for entree, a side of baseball glove, apple pie for dessert, and of course MOM, which stands for monooxidase methyl hydrate, a shelf-stablecoagulate that gives apple pie its sustained feeling of wetness.  (audience laughter)  Coke, of course, was the vegetable.  I know, Coke's a fruit; no letters.

BTW, if right-wing bigots got angry at Coca-Cola for that ad, wait until you watch their behind the scenes video, where you actually get to meet some of the Americans featured in the video tell their own stories of what America means to them.  If the ad caused them to blow their top, this one should cause a nuclear detonation.

Stephen then had another Tip/Wag segment, and noted that J.K. Rowling recently admittedshe shouldn't have put Hermione and Ron together at the end of the series, which set off a worldwide calamity.

Meanwhile, Jon talked about the snowfall in New York City, and then about the latest troubles surrounding New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).
