Jon Stewart’s Rebuke To Racists Upset By Coke’s Super Bowl Ad

Coca-Cola airing a controversial Super Bowl commercial — “Did Janet Jackson open a Coke can with her teat?” he wondered — he didn’t take long to rip the actual source of the controversy: the people who couldn’t handle seeing immigrants sing “America The Beautiful” in different languages.
“You know, the only thing more delicious than a tall, cool glass of ‘Co-cola’ is the irony that the self-appointed patriotic American watchdogs seem unaware that our national anthem is in fact not ‘America the Beautiful,’” Stewart pointed out.
Stewart said he couldn’t believe that the Coke ad inspired such anger, especially when placed to John Stamos’ “Greek sex games thing” yogurt commercial, or the beer commercial “celebrating the unnatural love between a dog and a horse,” or even Stephen Colbert’s head-splitting (literally) ad for Pistachio nuts.
CNN contributor Ben Ferguson’s argument that the commercial inspired resentment because it symbolized people “not assimilating” didn’t pass muster with Stewart, either.
“They’re singing ‘America the Beautiful’ while drinking Coca-Cola,” Stewart responded. “How much more American assimilation can they have? Maybe if they were open-carrying a gun shaped like Jesus while using a bald eagle str*p-on to f*ck an apple pie.”
Instead, Stewart said, the “patriots” raging over Coke’s ad should remember that their own ancestors also came from outside the U.S.
“Many of those early European immigrants clung to their native tongues for longer than was comfortable for the xenophobes of their time.” Stewart reminded his audience, before going to his own version of the commercial — one featuring the song sung in Russian, Italian, German, while displaying reminders of the anti-immigrant sentiment they had to face throughout the years.
