An Indiana man has confessed that he “killed the thing that he loved most in the world” after shooting his son in front of the 19-year-old’s pregnant girlfriend. David Carrender reportedly shot his son Wyatt over an argument about football.
Witnesses told police that the 49-year-old Carrender had been drinking and watching football with his son at Buffalo Wild Wings, while Wyatt acted as his designated driver. The two began to argue when Wyatt took his father home before he was ready to leave. It turned into a physical confrontation back at their house, with Wyatt reportedly headbutting his dad and knocking him down a flight of stairs.
The older Carrender then got his handgun and shot his son several times, according to police.
Tony White, a neighbor, said, “I heard a series of four to five gunshots real quick. I heard what I assumed was the young boy’s girlfriend scream. She was asking him (the father) why he had done it. She was just in terrible shape.”
Police claim this was not the first time they were called to the home.
White says his wife had seen a similar incident earlier this summer. “They got out in the yard and got to fighting, screaming. Someone was yelling, ‘Put the gun away, put the gun away,” he told WISH-TV in Indianapolis. “Nothing really happened after that incident. That blew over.”
Police say Carrender confessed to shooting his son and admitted he had been drinking. They also have confirmed that Wyatt Carrender’s girlfriend, Sabrina Canfield, witnessed the shooting.
Canfield told TheIndyChannel.com the following:
“I loved him to pieces; he was my best friend. He was just an upbeat happy guy. He was just always up for doing something.”
There is no word on how police plan to charge Carrender.
