The Thinking Housewife: "For A Liberal, Mankind And Life Itself Are Perfectible"

In addition to criticizing Francis' feigned mercy, Laura refers to his "promiscuous humility," saying that he "revels in his humility."
In a final reference to humility, Laura's reader, Jeannette V., informs us that "Francis is very proud of his humility."

Driven by ideological necessity, Laura giddily strings words together
-- independent of documentation --
with no apparent purpose but justification of prejudice

Dear Fred,

Thanks for your email.

Is this the "Thinking Housewife" post you had in mind?

If so, I do not see the "self-deprecating jibe."

Also...

In Laura's recent post, "Politicizing Storms" - http://www.thinkinghousewife.com/wp/2013/11/politicizing-storms/ - I am baffled by her observation that "For the liberal, mankind and life itself are perfectible."

Laura needs to get out more, rub shoulders with some "satanic rebels against God."

My liberal friends are painfully aware that life is not "perfectible."

How else to explain the persistent reappearance of Know Nothing politics, now manifesting in The Tea Party
http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/10/know-nothing-nativism-prototypal.html

Aside: I have begun to recommend donation to Tea Party candidates. No one can enhance the likelihood of a Democratic sweep next November like "the absolutely intransigent," "cosmically judgmental," and "morally interventionist" conservatives who would not be tread upon by anyone lacking a 10 figure bank account.

Yes, liberals believe that life on earth can be made better, but none of us believes in "perfection," partly because liberals are "diversity-tolerant" and therefore can not even agree on a definition of "perfection."

The battle cry of The Liberal Left is "Progress, not perfection." (Oddly, Paul Ryan confirms my theory conservatives are fixated on perfection, not liberals. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2012/09/paul-ryan-tells-truth.html

I venture that Laura is projecting.

After all, what exigent standard of "perfection" would judge "Pope" Francis non-Catholic?

"The terrible thing about our time is precisely the ease with which theories can be put into practice.  The more perfect, the more idealistic the theories, the more dreadful is their realization.  We are at last beginning to rediscover what perhaps men knew better in very ancient times, in primitive times before utopias were thought of: that liberty is bound up with imperfection, and that limitations, imperfections, errors are not only unavoidable but also salutary. The best is not the ideal.  Where what is theoretically best is imposed on everyone as the norm, then there is no longer any room even to be good.  The best, imposed as a norm, becomes evil.”
"Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander,” by Trappist monk, Father Thomas Merton

It is convenient that Laura -- who admits to being "no theologian" -- can so easily excommunicate popes.

Thus authorized by God Almighty, dispatching a lowly Trappist should be child's play.

Here is how iconic liberal Albert Einstein considers imperfection: "Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are even incapable of forming such opinions. The majority of the stupid is invincible and guaranteed for all time. The terror of their tyranny, however, is alleviated by their lack of consistency." (As always, contextualization elucidates. http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/11/einstein-majority-of-stupid-is.html)

The quest for "perfection" is "conservatism's" life blood, not liberalism's.

"Conservatives" whiff the slightest deviation from perfection and immediately -- if not sooner -- "the imperfect" are not just wrong but damned to Hell. (Listen closely and hear the polyphonic cheers of ermine-draped choristers.)

Compassion? Mercy? Forgiveness? Love your enemies? Do good to those who persecute you?

Giddily contemplating the condemnation of other human beings to an unquenchable lake of fire, conservative Christians depart the shallows of "projection" and dive headlong into unfathomable depths of self-apotheosis.

My Spanish student, Byron Howe (a retired multi-lingual polyglot from UNC-CH) just sent the following article, "Inside The Tea Party Brain: Can Science Explain Their Irrational Rage?" It is well worth reading.

Pax on both houses,
