Jon Stewart's family trick or treating
Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) was let off the hook — slightly — by a special panel on racism convened by Jon Stewart Wednesday night, as a group of Daily Showstaffers and comedians Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele found her remarks comparing the federal debt to slavery were not racist.
“Okay, alright, spoke too soon,” Key conceded, having pronounced her as “racist” the moment Stewart mentioned her name. “Not racist.”
“Just stupid,” Peele said in agreement, with correspondent Jessica Williams chiming in by calling her statements “super stupid, hella stupid.” Aasif Mandvi assesed her as “moronic,” with Jason Jones — the lone dissenting vote — pronouncing Palin as “adorable.”
Jones was at a disadvantage throughout the discussion, with him also calling the 7-year-old Virginia boy dressed up as a Ku Klux Klan member by his mother for Halloween “adorable,” to the dismay of his colleagues.
In response, Jones complained to Stewart, “it would be nice if we could get some impartial judges.” But the additions of Key & Peele still didn’t sit right with him.
“What are you talking about? We’re both mixed-race,” Key said to Jones.
“It literally doesn’t get any more impartial than that,” Peele added.
But Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen’s piece saying, “people with conventional views must repress a gag reflex” regarding New York City mayor-elect Bill de Blasio didn’t fare as well.
“He’s a volcano of hate, against white people,” Peele said quickly, confusing Stewart.
“Basically he’s saying you gotta cut the Tea Party some slack, ’cause they can’t think straight, because they’re trying too hard not to vomit when they see a Black guy with a white girl,” Peele explained.
“Or maybe two white girls,” Key suggested.
