On Wednesday night, in an edition of his recurring segment “Blood in the Water,” Stephen Colbert defended embattled Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen.
“Folks, this week’s helpless chum is Washington Post columnist and homeless Col. Sanders Richard Cohen,” Colbert said.
Cohen found himself in hot water earlier this week after a bizarre aside in a column about Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) and the tea party in which he said New York Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio’s interracial family would make people with “conventional” beliefs have to stifle their “gag reflex.”
“It’s not racist to gag when you see an interracial couple,” Colbert said. “A real racist would actually throw up on them.”
“It’s like throwing rice at a wedding. And sometimes it actually is rice!” he continued.
“Of course the Insane Scream Bleedia just doesn’t get it. They’re tearing into Cohen like a mako tearing into a walrus,” said Colbert, calling him “horribly racist” and a “power-worshipping bigot.” Charles Pierce at Esquire wrote, “Stop this man before he writes something again.”
“Folks, that is no different from a lynch mob,” he said, “is what I would say if I were racially insensitive.”
