Democratic Policy Priorities

Dear Arthur,

Thanks for your email and your comments on Ezra Klein's article, "Democrats Should Surrender On Taxes" - http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/10/democrats-should-surrender-on-taxes-by.html

I agree with your prioritization: 1.) grow the economy, and 2.) achieve immigration reform.

In August, during my week with Janet at Chautauqua, we heard a New York Times reporter, Julia Preston, describe Congressional immigration prospects.

Although Preston was quick to acknowledge her view are completely contrarian, she detailed real hope that the 113th Congress would pass a reasonably good immigration bill.

Here is the essence of Preston's view from a Chautauquan Daily article.  http://chqdaily.com/2013/08/17/immigration-correspondent-preston-explores-politics-behind-potential-reform/

“The immigration system is failing so many people — businesses, foreigners, dairy farmers,” Preston said. “So I think the folks who are advocating for Congress to do nothing will be in a weak position, because the system is so broken and is affecting so many people.”

Not only is the GOP committing suicide by persistent alienation of women, Hispanics, blacks, gays, young people and students, it is also clear to a growing majority of Americans - including Asian Americans who voted for Obama more decisively than Hispanics did!?! -  that the GOP has NO ideas, or if they do, they are completely obscured by rage, hatred and anarchical determination to destroy The American Experiment.

Whether consciously or unconsciously, the GOP - particularly its Tea Party wing - realizes that Destruction alone is capable of rolling back the calendar on the unstoppable (and epochal) progress made by Liberal Democracy.

The stickler in all this is that Republicans have lost the Hispanic vote -- at least for a full generation -- and they cannot afford any legislation that expands the latino voting block by giving indocumentados a blanket pathway to citizenship.

Thanks for the rec. I will check it.
My only advice to Obama is twofold.
Push for growth. Push for comprehensive immigration plan.
Growth helps the economy. So will immigration reform.
And both are doable. That’s it.

Dear A,

Thanks for your email.

Ezra Klein writes lots of good stuff.

Now that the Early Bird is defunct, you might want to make regular visits to WongBlog where you can read what Klein has been writing recently, along with the writings of other authors whom he deems worthy.

Here's Klein's WonkBlog link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/

Dear A,

Thanks for your email.

I am delighted by The Tea Party's decline and the brewing civil war in the Republican Party.

I remain eager for your view on Ezra Klein's article, "Democrats Should Surrender On Taxes" - http://paxonbothhouses.blogspot.com/2013/10/democrats-should-surrender-on-taxes-by.html

Even if you disagree, I think you'll be intrigued by Klein's argument.

Thanks!

Dear Arthur,

I did not notice.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I am a believer in pork barrel politics.

Although I don't like the way this slab of fat works to McConnell's benefit, in general I think wheels need a certain amount of greasing.

Did you notice in the bill to restart the government – the most generous amount for a dam in Kentucky?
That is what you and I paid to get out government back and re-elect McConell. . .
