My circles of friends and family include quite a few people who supported Trump. They have consistently doubled down on their bets, and feel quite vindicated, explaining things to me like:
- The more upset that “liberals” (i.e. other people) are, the more it is accepted as prima facie evidence that Trump is indeed doing a good job.
- “Trump is donating his time and doing things like passing a tax bill that actually hurts himself and his business,” is a common refrain.
- The real problem is Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama’s “deep state”, trying to undermine our President.
- No President has ever accomplished so much as Trump has in such a short period of time, including cutting the deficit, starting to pay off the debt, stopping illegal immigration, bringing back jobs to America, saving the coal industry, fixing our trade agreements, and being tough with our enemies.
- The Christian / hard-working “red states” have been subsidizing the atheist-, liberal- and mafia-controlled “blue states” for too long, and so the tax system needs to be made more fair.
- We barely survived 8 years of Obama, but everything is better now.
Look, about 2/3 of Republicans actually believe [1] that the stock market went down (it doubled) and unemployment went up (it went way down) while Obama was President. Most Republicans think that Obama is responsible for health care costs going up (from 1993-2010, prices rose 6.4% per year, but only 4.3% per year starting in 2010, primarily due to the ACA.) Most Republicans think that Obama was born in Kenya [2] [3], and is a Muslim [4] [5] [6] [7] [8].
I’m not a democrat. I’m a fiscal conservative, who used to be able to vote for some decent Republicans. I don’t even think Obama was a particularly good President (he was largely ineffective) — even if I like and respect him as a decent human being.
But what we have now in America is a societal cancer — a disease of unfathomable proportion. Facts do not matter. Truth does not matter. Morals do not matter. Public service does not matter. That is the modern day Republican party. And that cancer is actively working to destroy my country.
I owe it to my children, and to future generations, to make sure that this cancer is completely removed, and the damage undone. I hope that I am not alone.

[1] http://www.publicpolicypolling.c... “There continues to be a lot of misinformation about what has happened during Obama's time in office. 43% of voters think the unemployment rate has increased while Obama has been President, to only 49% who correctly recognize that it has decreased. And 32% of voters think the stock market has gone down during the Obama administration, to only 52% who correctly recognize that it has gone up. In both cases Democrats and independents are correct in their understanding of how things have changed since Obama became President, but Republicans claim by a 64/27 spread that unemployment has increased and by a 57/27 spread that the stock market has gone down.”
[2] Poll: Persistent Partisan Divide Over ‘Birther’ Question Only 27% of registered Republicans believed that Obama was born in the US. “The fact that more Republicans currently think that the president was not born in the U.S. and that this belief does not depend on how knowledgeable they are about politics is surprising.”
[3] Poll: 61 Percent of Trump Supporters Are Birthers “…what they learned about Donald Trump’s supporters is pretty much exactly what you would expect: 61 percent don’t believe President Obama was born in America.”
[4] Poll: Over 50% of GOP voters say Obama is a Muslim “According to the PPP poll, just 26 percent of Trump voters believe President Obama was born in the United States with 52 percent saying he wasn’t. Obama was born in Hawaii. Further, just 9 percent of Trump supporters think the president is a Christian with 62 percent thinking he’s a Muslim. The president has repeatedly said he is a Christian throughout the years.”
[5] Poll: Majority of Republicans believe Obama is a Muslim “US President Barack Obama is a Muslim. At least that is what a majority of Republicans in the United States believe, according to a new survey.”
[6] Poll: Two-Thirds of Trump Backers Think Obama Is Muslim “Two-thirds of voters with a favorable opinion of Donald Trump believe President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a quarter of them believe that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was murdered, a poll released Tuesday shows.”
[7] Do 59 percent of Americans believe Barack Obama is Muslim? “The survey found that 54 percent of the Republican primary electorate thought Obama is a Muslim, compared with just 14 percent who thought he is Christian and 32 percent who said they didn’t know.”
[8] Poll: Over 50% of GOP voters say Obama is a Muslim “Poll: Over 50% of GOP voters say Obama is a Muslim”
